18 October 2008
All-day Masterclass on
All Quadrants All Levels - The Ultimate Integration
Presented by John Rowan
In the recent literature on psychotherapy, a number of issues have come
to the fore which used to be neglected to some degree. In the
field of the individual psyche, there has been increasing attention to
different levels of consciousness which may be encountered. In
the field of the body, there has been much more interest in the
brain and in neurophysiology generally, as well as in health and
exercise. In the field of the intersubjective, there has been a
great deal more interest in social connections – the support system,
the ancestors, the culture of childhood through fairy stories and so
forth, as well as the relationship with the therapist. And in the
field of the social, there has been much more awareness of the
importance of oppression, poverty, prejudice – pressures of many
different kinds which affect our clients. The Integral approach
of Ken Wilber (sometimes known as the AQAL method) offers a systematic
and very attractive way of working with all four of these quadrants in
everyday work in the consulting room.
Participants will be given opportunities to do actual work using this
approach, and to get feedback on what they do. There are great
opportunities here to expand our repertoire in creative ways while
still being able to stay within the ordinary limitations of short term
work.
John Rowan, PhD, is a Fellow of the BPS (and also of BACP and UKCP) and
has been working in the field of therapy since 1978. He is a
Chartered Psychologist and a member of the Division of Counselling
Psychology. He is also on the Register of psychologists
practising as psychotherapists. His book on Subpersonalities is
well known, and a new book on Personification and the Dialogical Self
will be out next year. His book on the Transpersonal in therapy
went into a second edition in 2005, and he has been a member of the BPS
Transpersonal Psychology Section since its inception. He has been
corresponding with Ken Wilber since 1982, and is a member of the

All-day Masterclass on
Personification and the Dialogical Self
Presented by John Rowan
The recent work in Dialogical Self Theory (Hermans, DiMaggio and
others), Assimilation Theory (Stiles, Osatuke and others), Schema
Therapy (Young, Klosko and Weishaar), Narrative Therapy (White, Epston
and others), Person-Centred Therapy (Mearns, Cooper and others) and
experiential therapy (Greenberg, Mahrer and others) all adds up to make
a completely new approach to the use of personification in therapy.
Instead of all the plethora of names and titles for internal processes
and states, we now refer simply to I-positions.
This results in a huge simplification and demystifying of the whole
area. It is now clear that there are ways of working here which can be
adopted without loss by people in psychoanalysis (Bromberg), CBT
(Padesky), and many other approaches. This does not challenge any
existing way of working, as for example the relational, but simply adds
to it by working within it.
Participants will be given opportunities to do actual work using this
approach, and to get feedback on what they do. There are great
opportunities here to expand our repertoire in creative ways while
still being able to stay within the ordinary limitations of short term
work.
